world domination

It's pretty safe to say that almost all of our friends own at least one pair of Havaianas flip flops.  The rubber flip flops that are available in every colour of the rainbow are quite literally taking over the world.  Walk down the streets of your local neighborhood and you're sure to come across at least one person wearing them.  Well, CNN has taken notice and recently featured a story about their mercurial rise to fame.  While many factors may have played into their success, one thing has always remained consistent: Havaianas have and always will bear the words "Made in Brazil".  Fiercely loyal to the country which shot them to fame, Havaianas execs have pledged to continue to produce their products within their home country, despite plans to double sales and expand internationally.  There's nothing we love more than loyalty, so we're beyond pleased to hear this news!

Havaianas are available in Hong Kong at Havaianas LCX in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.

wasteland

Wasteland is another one of those cool-and-I-can-still-afford-it online shopping sites that produces killer lookbooks, featuring mega babes dressed in some of our favourite pieces for the season.  Their most recent Spring 2012 incarnation features plenty of pieces from stylestalker, including the perfect parka for rainy days and a skirt with just the right amount of grunge.  They're featured separately in Wasteland's lookbook, but if it were up to us, we'd rock them together, with a cropped T-shirt underneath.  The parka in particular is already a raging success with everyone from Amiee from Song of Style to Shenae Grimes of 90210.  Can't wait to get our hands on one for ourselves.

best bet: vogue festival

This one's for all of our UK readers: if you haven't already heard, Vogue is putting on their annual Vogue Festival this year, an event where they gather up all their fashion contacts in design, photography, broadcasting, journalism and modeling, and put on a two-day conference for aspiring young things looking to one day break into the wonderful world of fashion.  It ain't your average boring seminar where you listen to people talk all day long; there are makeover stalls, photoshoot booths, trend talks and fashion film screenings.  We think it's worth going to if only to catch House of Holland's Henry Holland speak.  He's got a wealth of knowledge about the industry, having been a former style editor at Smash Hits and, of course, he started his own fashion label which is now sold all over the world.  Holland is widely recognised in the business for his, "wry wit and penchant for acid-bright colours."  And well, he's just a big sweetheart, and who doesn't love a sweetheart?

black friday

It's Friday the 13th, meaning, yes, it's Black Friday.  We always think it's better to acknowledge a superstition than to turn a blind eye against it (better safe than sorry, am I right?) so here's to facing the day ahead of us with bravery!

industry profile: mischa

Designer Michelle Lai is the kind of girl who makes you feel inspired when you talk to her; she makes you want to get up and get moving.  Not only in terms of your career, but also in terms of your personal life, your overall health and your spirituality.  She speaks slowly and with purpose, making it clear to you that every word she chooses has been selected with careful thought and consideration.  She says wonderfully inspirational things such as, I get to incorporate my life and my lifestyle into what I do.  Of course, she is talking about her line of couture vintage clutches and travel bags for her company, Mischa.  We sat down with her for a lovely chat on a glorious afternoon before Easter; what ensued was a delightful conversation about everything from vintage shopping to doing yoga in Koh Samui.

A colourful array of small accessories from Mischa.

How did you start Mischa and what does Mischa mean?
Mischa is my nickname, my name is Michelle – and this is before Mischa Barton, by the way.  I was the original!  When I started my brand, I mean, I started it organically; before I started the company, I was doing it as a hobby.  I studied Japanese and art and I traveled to Japan a lot and I started collecting vintage kimono and obi.  I had this thing about Asian mystique and, in particular, Japan.  I love antique markets.  Back then, clutch bags weren’t really easy to find, so I decided to cut up one of my obis and make a clutch bag and I wore it out and people liked it and people started asking for them.  I was teaching art and English – this is the boring part.  During that time, I started up the brand and I was doing private sales and by-appointment only.  It grew from there.  It was a combination of a couple of things: I had a big investor invest a lot into the company, and at the same time I did this – I’m really into yoga and I did this 40-day yoga programme and after I finished that programme, at the same time I got approached by this investor.  Everything just added up.  And I quit and started Mischa fulltime.

And what about the print that you’re now so famous for?  Where did that come from?  Did you design it yourself?
Yes, I did design it myself.  The brand was built on bespoke, vintage, every piece is different, for the last 5-7 years.  When I was doing the private sales in Hong Kong, London, New York and Switzerland [I found] the nature of my lifestyle is that I travel a lot and my friends travel a lot.  All the dinners, events and parties we go to, we also needed stuff to travel with, stuff to use during the daytime.  There’s the Louis Vuitton bag, the Goyard, but people wanted something that was still sort of Asian-influenced, something fun and cool, something by me.  So they kept asking for it and asking for it and so I had to make a professional decision to start a second line.  It’s called the 'Travel Series'.  The print is based on the Japanese hexagon, and why I chose the hexagon is because when I decided I wanted to do a second line, I knew that I wanted to do something that was a signature, something that I could reproduce.  I looked at all of the old obi that I had used and I had bought and I found that three-quarters of them had hexagon prints.  I didn’t event realize it until I started to look back!  Then I did research into the hexagon print and it represents the sea tortoise shell, you can find it in a lot of Asian symbolism for thousands of years, but specifically in Japanese art the sea tortoise shell symbolizes longevity.  So I thought that was a really nice sentiment and a really good starting point for my brand because I wanted it to last and not just be a fad.

Who’s your customer?
They’re professionals; they’ve been there, done that.  They travel frequently.  A lot of my friends and clients are all women whom I admire.  They’re very accomplished and they hold these important positions in their company or they're really accomplished moms and they work for a charity.  I have clients that love it, they really love it; they buy it in all the different colours, they buy it for all of their friends, all of their family.  These women have character, they have personality.  I think my brand is not really about dressing supermodels; they’re real women, they know what they want, they know what they like.

Mischa 'Overnighter'.

What do you love most about what you do?
Every day is different.  It’s an adrenaline rush.  It’s like personal boot camp, because when you’re your own boss you really have to live the example and you’re personally accountable for how well you do.  I love it because I do everything on my terms.  You can say it like, “I call the shots,” but I think because I’m in that situation I’m much harder on myself than if I worked for somebody else.  And I get to incorporate my life and my lifestyle into what I do.  That’s what I love about it.  I love travel, photography, art, design, yoga, meditation, health; that has to show itself.  The flipside is: you’re personally accountable for everything!  The flipside is: from a creative point of view, sometimes when you don’t have inspiration you just don’t have inspiration.  It’s like getting blood out of a stone.  You have to remain childlike and have wonderment and find things that are interesting.

What do you do when you hit a roadblock and you can’t find inspiration?
I travel.  I don’t try; I let it go.

Mischa 'Bucket Bag'.

Where’s the most inspirational place you’ve been to recently?
This is a very cliché answer: Paris.  It’s the air, the smell, the streets, the surroundings.  Everyone’s personal style; it’s effortless, it’s elegant.  When I look at the girls I don’t think that they’ve thought about what they’re wearing, it looks like they just put it on and left the house and look fantastic!  Also beautiful and glamorous Bali; there’s something very magical about that place.  I think because they’ve preserved their artisanal culture, you see beautiful sculptures and houses so it’s a feast for the eyes when you go to Bali.  I really like Koh Samui because I’ve started this tradition that every January, after the craziness, I go by myself and I do this yoga retreat and detox holiday.  It’s not totally pleasant, but you come out feeling great.  You’re in the sun, and Koh Samui is relatively underdeveloped, there’s no mass tourism, and you feel like you're tucked away somewhere quiet and peaceful.

What does that do for you?
It’s to clear my mind.  You know, living in a modern city like Hong Kong, traveling so much and having the very busy sales season, and going to lots of openings, lots of events - you know, eye bags by the end of the week, your liver’s shot, you’re eating at odd hours of the day, you’re constantly surrounded by people!  Sometimes you just need to get away.  That’s important.  I love yoga, but another one of my loves is food and wine.  I love whiskey and smoking cigars.  So I kind of have to balance it out!  I can’t just do all that.

into the night

The Stylestalker girls have struck gold again with their latest lookbook for their Into The Night S/S '12 collection; inspired by our favourite top top models, Daria Werbowy and Kate Moss.  As soon as we laid eyes on the lookbook, we immediately thought of Vogue Paris' famous 'Noctambule' editorial styled by Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt, shot by Terry Richardson and starring Werbowy herself.  It's one of our all-time absolute favourite Vogue Paris shoots and the Stylestalker lookbook is getting us so excited for the collection to hit stores.  For us, this lookbook is the perfect let's get ready for a summer of parties and long nights out inspiration.  Yesssssss, bring it on!

best bet: get crafty

Easter is upon us, and while it's all well and good to sit back, enjoy the holiday and pig out on an inordinate amount of chocolate, Easter's also a great excuse to get crafty.  There are so many different ways in which you can decorate your Easter eggs; some more traditional and some more modern than others.  Try something different from your usual glitterfest this year and experiment with pastel patterns, black & white doodles, marbled colours, polka dots or ethic prints.  And just because you're getting crafty doesn't mean you can't enjoy a nice bowl of Easter chocolate all the while!

tractor beams

Cowboy the drummer got hired as a security guard at One Teaspoon's recent warehouse sale in Sydney.  Iconic Australian surfer Ozzy Wright offered to help keep watch.  As One Teaspoon's PR team told us, Ozzy and Cowboy "witnessed no suspicious behaviour, except for these two clowns dressed in women's clothing, recording a horrible song."  And so, Electric sekki is proud to introduce Tractor Beams, the hottest new garage band to come out of Australia.  This is their first single.  Enjoy.

profile: charlotte olympia

At first sight, Charlotte Olympia Dellal looks like a retro mermaid, with her 20's style curls, deep red lipstick, seashell jewelry and long leaf-print fishtail gown.  She is the childhood barbie fantasy of dressing up that gorgeous girl in all of the most kitschy clothes and accessories you can find, and yet she somehow manages makes it look so effortless.  This seems to be a design theme that Charlotte repeats every season for her Charlotte Olympia line: taking kitsch references and turning them into something desirable.  While she was in town to fete the launch of her new collection of shoes, handbags and jewelry at On Pedder, we had the lovely opportunity to have a chat to her, along with some of our blogger friends, Denise from SuperWowOMG and Christina from HKFashionGeek.  We found her to be incredibly warm and effusive, happily divulging her eccentric tastes and eagerly sharing details of her family life.  The poor PRs tried to get her to wrap up our conversation four times before she consented and moved on to the next.  She has that incredible ability to make you feel like the one who is important, listening intently to your questions, kindly addressing your concerns and laughing at all your jokes.  Just like her designs, she has an uncanny knack for making you smile.

With Charlotte Olympia (left) at On Pedder.

She says adorable things like, "I've got a pair of shoes that I say mermaids would like to wear ... if they had feet.  The 'She Sells Sea Shells' one; the one with all the shells, the really kitsch one."  In fact, our conversation reverted back to the topic of mermaids about a dozen times over.  She's the kind of English girl whom you can have over for a prim and proper tea, but the conversation would undoubtedly turn to some whimsical topic, brought up by Charlotte herself.

On things she likes to collect ...
"I'm someone who likes to collect stuff.  I'm a big collector of random stuff.  I'm really into my home at the moment, so I would like a leopard print rug in my dressing room.  I would also like -- ah!  I would like a hairdryer.  One of those old ones [the ones that go over your entire head].  I want one in my dressing room, because I think it would be a good focal point, and I'd actually use it!  So I want one of those ... in pink!  You can find anything online.  What's the last thing I bought online?  My mermaid coffee table.  I've got lots of spiderwebs, mermaids, leopard -- when you put them all together, it kind of works."

On how she would define someone she thinks is 'cool' ...
"I think on different people, it changes.  So I think, you know -- I like matchy-matchy, and it's my kind of thing.  Some people might like something I might like, but it doesn't work for me, so I think what is not cool is to try and do something that you don't feel comfortable with.  I think you can just tell when someone's cool.  It might be a really obvious answer, but that's exactly what I think is cool.  When you're not trying.  Effortless."  Charlotte eyes Denise's new dip-dyed blue tips in her hair.  "You know, like, I'd love to rock the blue tips, but I don't think I could."  To which Denise replied, "My sister says this is my mermaid hair."  "It is like mermaid hair!"  Charlotte exclaimed, excitedly.  "Each to their own."

On the amazing visual merchandising that was set up for the event ...
"I told them: I like the rotating spiderweb.  That's really obvious!  I'd like to take it home with me." Most would stop there, but Charlotte couldn't help but crack a joke about her baby, saying she could strap the newborn to it and it could be his version of a rocking chair.  It's comments and jokes like these that make us appreciate the wonderful imagination Charlotte has.  It's a combination of childlike wonder and the confidence of a grown woman, both in equal parts, working together to create the magical whimsy in her life and in her designs.  "I like to do things one the side of kitsch," Charlotte said.  "On the good side of kitsch."

best bet: earth hour

Earth Hour has been happening each year on 31 March since 2007; this year, their mission is no different.  From 8.30 to 9.30 in the evening, in your home country, turn off all the lights, turn off your internet, turn off the television and put away those iPads - anything that runs on electricity, turn it off.  For us, the exercise is more than just about energy sustainability, it's also about connecting with people on a deeper level, which is difficult to do when your iPhone is constantly buzzing or your friend is watching YouTube in the background as you talk.  But without lights, you're going to have to stock up on candles! In keeping with the spirit of Earth hour, we've gone straight for environmentally-friendly candles by Ecoya.

Stock up on candles from Ecoya: they're hand-poured, environmentally-friendly and they smell delicious!  We love the Ecoya Metro Glass Jar in Lemongrass & Ginger.

Ecoya is available from GOD in Leighton Centre, Silvercord, Hollywood Road, The Peak Galleria and Stanley Plaza.

Stuck on how to spend the time? Here's our list of suggestions to make the most of it in Hong Kong -- you'll have so much fun, you'll want it to last way longer than just an hour.

1. Tai Long Wan: hike out in the afternoon and camp on the beach by a campfire.  Summer's on the way and it's a good chance to do some stargazing.  Snuggle up to your loved one or prepare for an all-night gossip session with your bestie.

2. Evening Stroll: get romantic and go for a walk in the park with your sweetheart; Hong Kong is full of gorgeous parks in which to do this.  Our favourites are Hong Kong Park and Victoria Park.

3. Zzzzzz: catch up on sleep! There's no better excuse.  After a crazy selling season, that's what we're guessing some of our team might be up to!

4. Be a Kid: play a game of Hide-and-go-Seek, Sardines, Telephone or Tag in the dark with your favourite little (or big) people.  The side streets of Sheung Wan are a paradise for kid's games -- just watch out for cars!

Most importantly, have fun and make the most of it.  You'll end up wanting to do it every day.
