nanushka's sweater love

This fall, our favourite cool-girl label, Nanushka, launched a line of wonderfully cozy and whimsical sweaters, aptly called 'Sweater Love'.  To celebrate the launch of this line, the label put together an adorable little campaign video that makes long for sleepovers and jumping on the bed.  Shot with the 1960's in mind, the film showcases the Nanushka designer herself, Sandra Sandor, with who she call's her 'Nanushka friends' hanging out in a vintage-style bedroom and dancing to rock music on a retro bed.  Oh, and Elvis plays a small part in the film, too.  It's the perfect complement to Sweater Love's vintage-inspired oversized and colourful sweaters.  With the temperature dropping around the world, sweater weather is definitely upon us, and we can't wait to break out our Nanushka 'Sweater Love' pieces ASAP!

sass & bide's ethical fashion initiative

If you are a fan of sass & bide then you will be familiar with how each collection often features some sort of cultural, tribal element to it.  This is because the label's designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton, are avid travelers and often find inspiration abroad.  Their collections, however, go beyond just finding inspiration in the work of local artisans; sass & bide often work with the local craftsmen to contribute to several pieces in their collections.  The girls are firm believers that creative collaborations such as theirs with local artisans can help to lift these highly-skilled people out of poverty.  That's why it made perfect sense when the International Trade Centre asked sass & bide, among other designer such as Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney, to participate in their Ethical Fashion Initiative.  For the project, the sass & bide girls travelled to Kenya immediately after their London Fashion Week show to visit its largest slum and home to countless highly skilled artisans, Kibera.  The girls then worked with some of the local craftsmen on a selection of pieces for their collection.  Watch the uplifting video documenting the girls' journey below and start supporting the dying art of local craftsmanship!

shameless girl crush: cara delevigne

Cara Delevigne has been everywhere lately.  But, unlike others who suddenly appear everywhere and, consequently, we find them incredibly irritating, when it comes to Cara, we only ever find ourselves wanting more!  She first broke out onto the fashion scene when she was selected by Christopher Bailey to front Burberry's Spring/Summer 2011 campaign though, due to her family's standing in British high-society, she had been a fixture on the media circuit for quite some time already.  What we love about Cara is that she isn't a conventional beauty, but she has a strong and charming personality that comes across clearly in every thing we've seen her do.  At just 20-years-old, Cara has since gone on to become the face of Chanel, graced the cover of Vogue UK and appeared in the blockbuster film adaptation of Anna Karenina.  Because of her strong character and fun personality, we think Cara is best appreciated on film and, thus, have compiled a shameless girl crush list of Cara's best video appearances to date.  Press play and prepare to be won over.

Cara Delevigne has had a long relationship with Katie Grand's phenomenal LOVE Magazine.

Cara Delevigne backstage at the Topshop Unique show at London Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013, doing the Harlem Shake with fellow British models Jordan Dunn and Rosie Tupper.  So adorable!

Cara Delevigne lip-synching You Don't Impress Me Much by Shania Twain for LOVE Magazine.  Spot on, makes us love the song all over again!

If Cara lip synching wasn't enough for you, the you can catch her actually singing in this "Katie Grand Loves Hogan" video produced for LOVE Magazine.  How talented is this girl!  I mean, she can actually sing!

An early interview that Cara did for I Am A Village Bicycle in which she is incredibly charming and down-to-earth.  She seems like heaps of fun to hang out with, no?

Finally, here's Cara in a video she did for the Telegraph in which she changes into mind-boggling amount of different outfits and dances around in an incredibly fun and charming way.

spotted on: im yoona in insight

K-pop is truly taking over the world.  Last year, PSY released his international smash hit, Gangnam Style and Korean pop sensation Girls' Generation have been topping music charts all over the world; last year, Girls' Generation were even the first Asian pop band to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman.  The group is made up of nine members, with Im Yoona as the top-billed, lead dancer of the group.  For their latest song, I Got A Boy (which has over 43 million hits on YouTube), Im Yoona wore a pair of colourful printed jeans from Insight 51's latest collection.  Paired with a cropped top, sneakers, a baseball cap and a varsity jacket, Im Yoona gives the jeans her own pop-y twist and makes them look like a million bucks!  She definitely makes us want to run out and buy a pair right now.  Check her out in Girls' Generation's video, I Got A Boy, below.

the industry strikes back!

Earlier this year, Electric sekki proudly partnered up with 10 of Hong Kong's most inspirational creatives for our annual Les Artistes initiative. We worked with talented upcoming Hong Kong photographer, Dicky Manana, to shoot 10 bright young things who work closely with the fashion industry. The bright colours, prints and textiles of 2012 inspired a comic-book style Industry Strikes Back! photo shoot and video, where each artist involved was depicted as a superhero sent to save the world for the darkness of bordom and ennui.

It was an honor to work with so many talented, cool people, all working together on this fantastic creative endeavor. Hong Kong is most often referred to as a financial paradise, filled with commercial opportunities and financial gain, but it's also full of wonderfully creative-driven people who are striving for innovation and pushing the boundaries of our imaginations each day. See our Les Artistes: The Industry Strikes Back! superheros, shot by HKHQ.tv, below.

Les Artistes: The Industry Strikes Back! features DJs Allan Ho and Ivan Sit of High Tech Orchestra, fashion stylist Cheryl Leung, photographer Dicky Manana, Lane Crawford buyers Kelly Wong and Charles Lo, Electric sekki Brand Stylist KK Kwong, I.T Merchandise Manager Tracey Cheng, Buzz Concepts PR & Marketing Manager Francisco Ricafort and Konzepp Style Curator Juan-Carlos Aquino.

the new wild ones

Insight 51's Fall 2012 collection 'The New Wild Ones' took inspiration from Neo-Expressionism, through its use of bold, energetic clashing prints and popping colours.  It's the quintessential Cool-Girl look that you see on gorgeous young things on the streets, with their nonchalant beauty and perfect unkept manes.  And, in classic Insight style, it all looks so comfortable--the kind of clothing you can wear for a mystery stroll through the brush, knowing that the pieces will look even better if you get them a bit dirty here or accidentally pull a seam there.  Check out their killer lookbook below and get inspired for a winter full of Insight.

Insight is currently available in Hong Kong at I.T, Bauhaus, Beams and Ray Beams, Initial and Island Wake.

gangnam style

PSY is set to have the biggest musical comeback Korea's ever seen, due to his viral music video to hit tune Gangnam Style.  Thanks to YouTube, PSY's fame has increased exponentially--having posted his hilarious Gangnam Style on the video sharing platform, he's garnered almost 30 million views in the one month it's been online.  Gangnam Style refers to an affluent area of Korea called Gangnam, and the song is all about a luxurious lifestyle.  So what's the big deal about PSY?  Well, first of all, he's funny as hell, he's got killer dance-moves and, finally, he's got a unique fashion style that he embraces wholeheartedly.  So it's obvious why we're so crazy about him.  And we fell for him even more when we saw his 'love interest' in the video dressed in a House of Holland 'Bingo Ball' sweater -- I think it's safe to say that we're in love!

House of Holland's 'Bingo Ball' sweater makes a stunning appearance!

House of Holland is available at A Boutique and Liger in Hong Kong; Feispace, Glossy, Arrtco and Uoofo.com in China; 707 in Indonesia; Darling You, Koon and Tom Greyhound Downstairs in Korea; Nicole Boutique in Macau; Inhabit in Singapore; Secret Service in Taiwan, and Emporium in Thailand.

get richard

Richard Nicoll recently did an interview with Vogue Italia; but this was no ordinary interview.  As a sort of 'commercial' advertising this interview, Vogue Italia commissioned filmmaker Justin Anderson to create a short film about the lead-up to the interview.  The film is entitled 'Get Richard' and Vogue Italia claims on their website that it is 'based on a true story'.  Now, we're not sure just how true that is, but it's a stellar film, nonetheless!  The story follows Richard, who is kidnapped by a well-dressed crew of subversive looking models, driven through the desert and half-buried in the sand such that only his upper torso and head are exposed aboveground.  The film ends with a long shot of Richard, stuck there in the desert, with a microphone situated just in front of him.  In our opinion, it's the best advert ever made for an interview!  Check the video out here, and read excerpts from his interview below.

Why did you start designing?
I came to London to study fine art and do sculpture; then I chose fashion as one of my foundation course options and found I that had a knack for it. I had always been really interested in self-expression through clothes... I think my first interest in fashion came through an intense shyness I had when I was young, I used to communicate through clothes rather than speaking and dressing differently was my way of consciously not fitting in, but without having to talk much. Although you evolve; I think you are still that person you were in your teens, just in a more sophisticated way.

Do you look for inspiration or does it just happen?
It's an instinct, it's something you're born with I think, the creativity, the sensitivity to things - but there are times when I don’t want to feel it, when I kind of want to close my mind to inspiration. I’ll ignore ideas and wait until the moment is right, there are periods of productivity and periods of consolidation. I think that inspiration can be seen as a subconscious feeling you have for what feels sociologically relevant and also personally relevant, I guess there’s a sort of message no matter how abstract it is.

Do you oversee the entire creative process?
I’m Creative Director as it were but I’m lucky to work with really talented creative pattern cutters, we have a lot of dialogue about an idea that can be kind of abstract and from there we just do a lot of experiments together, a lot of fittings, so it’s very much a team effort.

What is your idea of beauty?
"There's beauty in sensitivity...for me it’s about conveying a sense of honesty of the human condition, it’s important to convey real fragility. Sometimes even a slightly disturbed sense of beauty- something that is subtle, sophisticated, a knowing sense of naivety; a modern esoteric elegance. It’s individual opinion but for me its about imperfection and celebration, my work is about an anti-heroine; it’s about celebrating a sense of idiosyncrasy and reality."

Who is this anti-heroine?
"To an extent it is an image of me infused in my collection. I’m not perfect, I celebrate my imperfections and always have, I guess the women I think about share the same qualities. I’m interested in a sense of unsettling normality; something seems on the surface to be calm and normal and there’s an undercurrent of something strange, a Lynchian influence I guess."

What makes something beautiful is it subjective, or can something be beautiful?
I think something can be beautiful in a kind of timeless way- but I think modern beauty is subjective. My work is about imperfect beauty, something that has that right balance of elegance and provocation.

So why do you think people wear your clothes?
"I think they relate to the honesty, a lot of my clothes are simple and concise; they allow the wearer to express themselves, to interpret the clothes into their own wardrobes and lives. I think a lot of women relate to that, the shapes are versatile and our best selling item is the oversized one size fits all shape that is in the film."

Richard Nicoll is currently available it at I.T Hong Kong, Liger Hong Kong, Maria Luisa Hong Kong, Inhabit Singapore, FjL Indonesia, Je Ne Sais Quoi Korea.

forever 21 x hk bloggers

Much of the buzz around the Hong Kong retail scene lately has been centered around Forever 21 opening up their first store here, in Causeway Bay.  A massive six-story space jam-packed with goodies at what's definitely the best prices we've seen for a fast-fashion retailer, you can spend a good couple of hours in there browsing and going on a shopping spree without breaking the bank.  In celebration of their opening, Forever 21 teamed up with four of our favourite Hong Kong fashion bloggers, SUPERWOWOMG, Fashion Hedonism, Vnikali and Ztylistas, filmed them around Hong Kong and chatted to them about their style.  They're also teaming up for a big giveaway competition, where the winner not only gets a $400 giftcard, but they can also win tickets to exclusive grand opening party on 11 May and the opportunity to meet and be styled by their favourite bloggers!  Check out the videos below, then click the links to their blogs to enter the competition.

world domination

It's pretty safe to say that almost all of our friends own at least one pair of Havaianas flip flops.  The rubber flip flops that are available in every colour of the rainbow are quite literally taking over the world.  Walk down the streets of your local neighborhood and you're sure to come across at least one person wearing them.  Well, CNN has taken notice and recently featured a story about their mercurial rise to fame.  While many factors may have played into their success, one thing has always remained consistent: Havaianas have and always will bear the words "Made in Brazil".  Fiercely loyal to the country which shot them to fame, Havaianas execs have pledged to continue to produce their products within their home country, despite plans to double sales and expand internationally.  There's nothing we love more than loyalty, so we're beyond pleased to hear this news!

Havaianas are available in Hong Kong at Havaianas LCX in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.

tractor beams

Cowboy the drummer got hired as a security guard at One Teaspoon's recent warehouse sale in Sydney.  Iconic Australian surfer Ozzy Wright offered to help keep watch.  As One Teaspoon's PR team told us, Ozzy and Cowboy "witnessed no suspicious behaviour, except for these two clowns dressed in women's clothing, recording a horrible song."  And so, Electric sekki is proud to introduce Tractor Beams, the hottest new garage band to come out of Australia.  This is their first single.  Enjoy.

chalayan f/w '12: runway

Yesterday we took you backstage at the Chalayan show; today, we're taking you to the front row.  Chalayan's show was definitely the highlight for us this fashion week.  Not only was the collection beautiful, the show was also wonderfully executed to highlight each design story within the show.  The overall mood of the show was simple and effortless, but achingly cool.  "I've been doing this for so long; a lot of it is instinctive," Chalayan told Style.com's Tim Blank's after the show.  It really was.  We also managed to speak to him quickly backstage before the show began and the designer was calm and collected.  His confidence and cool was wonderfully reflected in the clothes he sent down the catwalk.  The pieces our buyers are loving so far?  The dual-coloured coats are a surefire hit for the coming fall.

We were lucky enough to go backstage at Hussein Chalayan's Fall 2012 show, which showed earlier this week at Paris Fashion Week.  We saw top supermodels Ming Xi, Daiane Conterato, Maria Bradley and Hanne Gaby Odiele walking Chalayan's runway in glorious pieces which demonstrated the designer's astute knowledge of colour, form and structure.  Have a sneaky peek backstage at the glorious Chalayan show and stay tuned for our runway video coming up soon.

resist revolt rebel

Leave it to One Teaspoon to create a 'revolution' narrative around their latest collection.  Resist. Revolt. Rebel. is One Teaspoon's latest offering for Spring 2012 and along with it comes a short film directed by Taylor Steele, starring Krystal Glynn, who's being touted as 'Australia's answer to Kate Moss'.  I mean, does it get better than that?  A revolution takes a group of courageous souls, here led by the gorgeous Glynn; fighting for something anti-establishment, here dressed as a denim-wearing cult.  Shot in Australia's gorgeous Byron Bay on a moody day, the outcome is uniquely different from many of the 'fashion films' you see nowadays; instead of focusing too much on the clothing, Steele's film evokes more of a feeling, a mood, an emotional connection to what the greater collection might be about.  It's a refreshing take on the 'fashion film', so definitely check it out below.

homeland

Sometimes, when you live in a city like Hong Kong, it's easy to get caught up in the everyday work buzz and forget about how magnificent this city really is.  Well, photographer Asa Li never seems to have forgotten it.  For his video, Homeland, Asa spent six months taking time-lapse photographs in various hotspots around Hong Kong, capturing the city's vivacious energy and glorious skyline.  All things aside, if we just stop for a moment to admire the beauty of Hong Kong's aesthetics, you can tell, immediately, that this is a town full of unstoppable, driven and inspiring people.  So here's to our magnificent city and to all the amazing citizens who make it our home.

british invasion

Late last year, The British Fashion Council brought over a group of emerging British designers to Hong Kong as part of their London Show Rooms initiative.  London Show Rooms is one of the British Fashion Council's most crucial projects; providing a hand-selected exclusive group of UK-based designers with moral support, commercial expertise, and creative encouragement.  This was the first time that The British Fashion Council held an event in Asia, and it was about time they did!  Hong Kong is seen by many as the gateway to China, and the Far East's booming economy is gradually playing a lager role in these young designers' future success.  The event was a wonderful celebration of British creative talent, thanks to the combined partnership of Angelica Cheung and her team at Vogue China, as well as British Fashion Council Ambassador and Vogue.com contributor Sarah Mower.  Electric sekki was there with HKHQ.tv to capture the event on film.  Check out what when down, along with exclusive interviews with all the key people involved.  We can't wait until London Show Rooms travels to China this year!

lana or marisa

A few months ago, our marketing manager, Sam, developed an obsession with the images of Yves Saint Laurent's long-time muse, Marisa Berenson.  Simultaneously, those in our office have also recently developed a major girl-crush on retro songstress, Lana Del Rey.  Yves Saint Laurent went through a period in the 70's when he became enamored of a certain kind of beauty: that tragic, mysterious, gorgeous girl whose motto seemed to be live fast, die young.  Well, Lana Del Rey very much seems to be channelling Marisa Berenson lately with a hedonistic (and tragic) music video for her new single, Born to Die.  She even goes so far as to emulate one of Berenson's most iconic images, with a headpiece made out of large flowers in her hair.  So we ask you: who wore it best?  Lana or Marisa?  Decide for yourself.  Whatever the answer is, we think this is a sure sign of a new trend brewing...

Lana Del Rey performs her latest single, Born to Die.
