If you are a fan of sass & bide then you will be familiar with how each collection often features some sort of cultural, tribal element to it. This is because the label's designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton, are avid travelers and often find inspiration abroad. Their collections, however, go beyond just finding inspiration in the work of local artisans; sass & bide often work with the local craftsmen to contribute to several pieces in their collections. The girls are firm believers that creative collaborations such as theirs with local artisans can help to lift these highly-skilled people out of poverty. That's why it made perfect sense when the International Trade Centre asked sass & bide, among other designer such as Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney, to participate in their Ethical Fashion Initiative. For the project, the sass & bide girls travelled to Kenya immediately after their London Fashion Week show to visit its largest slum and home to countless highly skilled artisans, Kibera. The girls then worked with some of the local craftsmen on a selection of pieces for their collection.
