The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit ball - or, as we all know it, the Met Ball - was held last night in New York with the theme this year being all things punk. Now, when the theme was first announced months and months ago, we were really excited to see what the guests would choose to wear to the event; usually, guests turn up in outfits in homage to the theme. And, with the theme being punk, we were really looking forward to seeing all the red carpet pictures. It was, however, rather a let down. Very few people dressed up in full-on punk gear, and those who did put in some effort didn't seem adventurous enough to really go all the way punk. There were loads of gorgeous gowns, yes, but few that really stuck to the theme. Overall, we think everyone played it way to safe. Anyway, here are our picks for the punk-est of them all.
Rosie Huntington-Whitely in Gucci. Not really that punk, but the mesh upper portion and overall scantily clad feeling of the dress gives it a small nod to the punk movement.
Alexa Chung in Erdem. The tattered fabric and the sheer black chiffon make this look a winner.
Allison Williams in Altuzarra. Allison went for a goth-punk twist with this look, custom-made for the event. Williams began researching punk fashion back in March, so we were looking forward to what she and Altuzarra would come up with. This did not disappoint.
Anne Hathaway in Valentino: love, love, love her short blonde hair! Makes her look so much more interesting!
Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney. Just enough punk, with the add-on spiked belt.
Carine Roitfeld in Givenchy. Too punk for words!
Coco Rocha in Fausto Puglisi for Ungaro. Leave it to Coco to go for the drama!
Donatella Versace & daughter in Versace. Another goth-punk twist from Versace.
Doutzen Kroes in Theyskens' Theory. The leather bustier is wonderfully vampy.
Florence Welch in Givenchy. Leather, fringing and velvet--what more could you want?
Constance Jablonski in Wes Gordon. Loved this gown!
Jamie King in Topshop. The lace turtleneck and the studded headpiece really do it for us.
Jessica Biel in Giambattista Valli Couture. This sequined mesh is a great ball-gown twist to the distressed fabrics beloved by punks all over the world.
Katy Perry in Dolce & Gabbana. Adorned with crosses such as these, how could you not get the punk reference.
Liu Wen in McQueen. Stunning. Just stunning. So happy to see Liu Wen in this piece. She should never take it off. Perfectly accessorized, too! Props to Lane Crawford for styling her!
Madonna in Givenchy. Well, at least she really went all out and stuck to the theme!
Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs. Props to her for taking the risk and going all out--and looking drop dead gorgeous, too!
Rita Ora in Thakoon. Exposed threads anda bare midriff; the recipe for punk.
Christina Ricci in Vivienne Westwood. When it comes to punk, you just can't go wrong in a Westwood gown.
Nicole Ritchie in Topshop. We love this look mainly due to her hair.
Anja Rubik in Anthony Vaccarello. Va-va-voom! Too hot for words.
Sarah-Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon. You can always count on SJP to bring it.
Gwen Stefani in Margiela. Perfection.
Chloe Sevigny in Proenza Schouler. Punk reinvented with a turban? It shouldn't work, but it does! Isn't that what the whole punk movement was about!?
Sienna Miller and Cara Delevigne in Burberry studded goodness.
Stella Tennant in Christopher Kane. It's all in the attitude, isn't it, Stella?
Gisele Bundchen in Anthony Vaccarello. Again, too hot for words. Mr Vaccarello can do no wrong!
And last, but not least, the stunning Rooney Mara, who wore Givenchy to the gala and showed the crowds how to perfectly master that delicate balance between ball gown attire and classic punk. A match made in heaven.
