on the street: super sunnies

If there's one thing every cool kid needs in their big bag of fashion tricks, it's a killer pair of sunglasses.  It's the easiest way to step your outfit up a notch (and, let's face it, the best way to hide those circles under your eyes) so it's inexcusable not have a super pair.  Whether you go classic like photogrpaher Candice Lake (middle right) in a pair of aviators, poppy like casting director extraordinnaire Natalie Joos (middle left) or retro like blogger Montarna (bottom left), make sure you've got at least one pair of super sunnies to add to your fashion repertoire.  Need more inspiration?  Then check out these stylish people we snapped at Mercedes-Benz Australian Fashion Week today.

designer style series: ksubi

While we're here at Mercedes-Benz Australian Fashion Week, we'll be bringing you a behind-the-scenes look at where the design magic happens.  That's right: we'll be taking you into the designer's studio.  In our first 'Designer Style Series' profile, we're giving you an all-access pass into the ksubi workshop, where these bad boys create some of the most coveted neo-grunge pieces around.  From their custom denim workshop to their graphic art department to their rich archive of past designs, this is definitely one office space we wouldn't mind rocking up to each day for work.  And don't forget to catch the ksubi show later today at 8pm; we can't wait to see what these guys come up with next.

mbfwa: must haves

Packing for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney can be tricky if you're from the Northern Hemisphere because the seasons are reversed; but don't worry, we've put together a guide for some MBFWA must-haves this season.  Two things that the Australian fashion-set love are colour and prints, so make sure every outfit you've got planned features at least one of the two.  Brighten up a plain black dress with a multi-coloured belt from sass & bide or a pair of bright boots from Ginger & Smart.  Or, if you're more daring, try a printed silk shirt from Oroton.  Don't forget it's currently winter down there, so make sure to grab a cozy jacket - we love this one from Talulah.  Last but not least: don't forget to have fun, smile and enjoy the week.

the gold standard

Sammi Cheng <鄭秀文> is no stranger to statement pieces featuring lots of colour, sparkle or embellishment.  In fact, she's probably just as well-known for her statement style as she is for her chart-topping music.  Metallics and intricate beading are two huge trends for the F/W '12 season, and sass & bide have really hit the nail on its head with this stunning gold cocktail dress that Sammi chose for a recent shoot with Ming Pao Weekly.  If there was ever a gold standard for killer dressing, then this dress is it.  We can't wait until it hits stores with the rest of sass & bide's stunning Pre-fall 2012 collection.  Don't worry, we'll be the first to tell you when it hits the shop floors!

richard nicoll menswear

A couple of days ago, we reported that Richard Nicoll would be debuting a bridal collection in collaboration with Topshop; today comes news that Nicoll will be expanding his product line even more with a foray into menswear during The British Fashion Council's MAN initiative, taking place on 15-17 June.  MAN is London's first menswear-only fashion week, featuring revered menswear names such as Dunhill and Pringle of Scotland, as well as Saville Row heritage brands E.Tauz and Richard James.  It is a huge honor for Richard Nicoll to be invited to debut his first menswear collection amongst such great company.  We can't wait to see what he comes up with!

coachella babes

Coachella is the biggest US-based music festival of the year, attracting acts such as The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg, Calvin Harris, Florence & The Machine and many more.  It's also a hotspot for mega babes such as Kate Bosworth, Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Kate Moss.  Perhaps the most interesting thing about Coachella is that it's become a place for the fashion set to go to "be seen" and photographed for their impossibly cool, laid-back style.  This year's been no different and we've spotted some of our favourite labels such as Style Stalker, One Teaspoon and ksubi.  Check out some of our favourite Coachella looks below.

spotted: rihanna ♥'s something else

Everyone's favourite mega music babe, Rihanna, has racked up a name for herself outside of the music scene as a poster girl for rebel-girl fashion style.  Never one to shy away from a loud printed dress or a revealing sweater, Rihanna gets major kudos from the designers all over the world, who clamour to dress her in their wares.  Well, it seems like a recently discovered favourite of hers is Something Else by Natalie Wood.  Known for their creative use of interesting textiles and comfortable fabrics, we can definitely understand why Ri-Ri's taken a liking to Something Else.  She was recently spotted out at dinner in LA in their 'Optic Sweater Dress' and then at Coachella in their 'Embroidered Bomber'.  We thing Rihanna and Something Else make an excellent pairing, don't you?

Something Else by Natalie Wood is available in Hong Kong at Harvey Nichols, I.T, Liger and Little Black Dress.

blushing bride

If you're planning on getting married sometime this summer then thank your lucky stars, because you'll be able to add Richard Nicoll to your list of possible wedding dress designer candidates. And not only that, but you'll also be able to get your hands on a Nicoll-designed wedding dress for a pretty great deal too, since he's partnering up with high street megastars, Topshop, to produce the collection.  So far, no images of Nicoll's bridal collection for Topshop have been released, but the designs promise to feature Nicoll's signature feminine-meets-sculptural aesthetic.  Nicoll's team has also been quoted saying that the collection will be, "a modern alternative to meringue [wedding dress] culture."  If you're absolutely dying to know what the dresses might look like, have a peek at these two weddings gowns he designed for his close friends, Linder Sterling and Desreen.  We can't wait to see what he's got in store for us.

Richard Nicoll is currently available in Hong Kong at I.T and Liger.

saturdays surf at lane crawford

Saturdays Surf NYC has arrived in Hong Kong, setting up a pop-up installation space within Lane Crawford ifc.  Open until 24 May, Saturdays Surf is giving the Hong Kong public a unique opportunity to "witness the brand in its essence, with a fit-out defined by the aesthetic of the New York entity."  One thing we love most about the installation are the INSIGHT surfboards they have on offer, decorated with some of the greatest artwork we've come across in Hong Kong.  They're the perfect summer statement piece; not just for the beach, but even as a piece of art with which to decorate your house.  Get in the mood for summer: browse through everything from surf art, beach products and accessories, skateboards and sunglasses, to coffee table books.  You'll be stomping your feet and praying for these April Showers to get lost soon so that you can break out that swimwear and head on down to the beach!

industry profile: blitz

Blitz is an inspiring new concept space curated by international accessories experts, Pedder Group, at Lane Crawford.  The genius behind Blitz is that it is a specialised area in which you can find all the most covetable runway accessories of the season.  In the past, many of the exquisite runway pieces you'd see at the shows would never make it to production; Blitz is making an effort to support designers' runway vision by creating a space in which these special pieces can be displayed appropriately and sold to a suitable consumer audience which appreciates the amount of skill and workmanship that goes into each piece.  We spoke to the current brainchild of the Blitz project, Kim Kollar, to find out more about this inspiring new initiative.  And in case you're wondering, Kim's top picks for SS12 are a Maison Martin Margiela runway cape and any/all of the Lanvin eagle-crystal embellished runway pieces.  We couldn't agree with her more.

Tell us: what is Blitz and what does it mean to you?
Blitz represents a space. And not necessarily a physical one, dedicated to new ideas, innovative projects, interesting collaborations, and a platform for sharing new discoveries. To me personally, it is creativity that has tremendous dimension and reach in a commercial way.

Balenciaga SS12 runway heels.

Educate us: why do some of our favourite runway items never make it to the stores?
I can answer this one based on first hand experience! In many instances, accessories and styling elements are created especially for the shows. They are not offered on the linesheet for buyers to choose. Most of the time, this is because the items made were handmade in the ateliers and are one of kind.

Alexander McQueen SS12 lace headpieces.

Teach us: how would you style that phenomenal S/S '12 Alexander McQueen lace headpiece?
I would pair the black headpiece with a sleeveless ivory Stella McCartney tuxedo with a high waisted trouser with a black chiffon sleeveless Valentino blouse underneath. And a red mouth. Very Bianc Jagger meets Lady Gaga. The sleeves would have to be taken off, as I haven’t seen a sleeveless tux as of late. Ruffles on the blouse are optional, depending if I was feeling romantic or not.

Tease us: what do you love most about your job (show off a little)?
The range of talent and the mediums I get to work with sourcing inspiration and partners to work with. For instance, right now I am working with an amazing artist to develop special products to ranslate his art into wearable objects. I am also working with a vintage dealer in Paris who supplies inspiration for Lanvin, YSL, Chanel jewelry… to bring some of the most exquisite vintage pieces to Hong Kong. It’s like shopping/styling/curating simultaneously. It’s awesome!

Lanvin SS12 runway belt & Kenzo SS12 runway bag.

Inspire us: what does it take to do your job?
1) Having a point of view and a point of reference to form an opinion on what is good,
2) Project management is a must as there are many different components that have to come together for a project to launch successfully,
3) A keen interest in fashion, music, art, style and culture,
4) Vision and enthusiasm: to push the envelope and keep things interesting for everyone!

Show us: what's one thing on your desk at work that personalizes your space for you?
I am fairly new and live by a minimalism-at-work-aesthetic so not much to report except for the essentials: water, caffeine, sunglasses, a note from my husband, and a Diptyque Baies candle. Scents really decorate a space.

You can find Blitz at Lane Crawford's ifc and Canton Road stores in Hong Kong and at their Seasons Palace store in Beijing.

world domination

It's pretty safe to say that almost all of our friends own at least one pair of Havaianas flip flops.  The rubber flip flops that are available in every colour of the rainbow are quite literally taking over the world.  Walk down the streets of your local neighborhood and you're sure to come across at least one person wearing them.  Well, CNN has taken notice and recently featured a story about their mercurial rise to fame.  While many factors may have played into their success, one thing has always remained consistent: Havaianas have and always will bear the words "Made in Brazil".  Fiercely loyal to the country which shot them to fame, Havaianas execs have pledged to continue to produce their products within their home country, despite plans to double sales and expand internationally.  There's nothing we love more than loyalty, so we're beyond pleased to hear this news!

Havaianas are available in Hong Kong at Havaianas LCX in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.
