electric sekki in paris: contemporary

The most important part of the Electric sekki team travelling to Paris each season is to support the designers in each of their showrooms and host Asian press and buyers who come to view the collections.  Each season, the team has the distinct pleasure of being surrounded by gorgeous garments such as these all day long!  Although many of Electric sekki's contemporary brands don't present runway shows in Paris, but in places such as London instead, it is still important for them to present their collections in a showroom space in Paris, where all the major international press and buyers congregate to view the new offerings of the season.  If you want a bit of a behind-the-scenes take on what goes on and how the showrooms look, take a sneaky peak at the Paris Fashion Week photo diary from our Contemporary Department below.

sass & bide
sass & bide presented their 'Wintergate' collection first at London Fashion Week, and had a private showroom in Paris as well to great international press and buyers.

The collection featured a mostly monochromatic palette of blacks and white, with metallic accents and pops of mustard yellow.

sass & bide's signature embellishments, alongside FW13's bondage-inspired accents.

Some fantastic knitwear pieces from sass & bide this season.

The embellished piping on this dress and jacket made them a sure-fire sales hit!

RICHARD NICOLL at Tomorrow.

Richard Nicoll originally showed at London Fashion Week, but pariticpated in Tomorrow's showroom, as they have for the past several seasons, while in Paris.

Richard Nicoll himself (right) chats to a lucky customer at the showroom.

Ultra luxe: supple leathers and crocodile embossing were what it was all about this season!

Gorgeous colours.  Like a scoop of sorbet!

Beautiful patterns to add some dimension to the collection.

The sequin work on this dress is to die for!  Embellished to look like crocodile scales.  Genius!

HOUSE OF HOLLAND at Polly King.
House of Holland's Rave Nana collection showed at London Fashion Week and also took part at the Polly King Showroom while in Paris.

Quirky embellishments on this column gown from House of Holland.

Can you see what they are?  If you guessed smoking cigarettes then you are correct!  Cheeky, cheeky!

House of Holland continues their collaboration with Superga this season with these surrealist sneakers.

No nana-inspired outfit would be complete without a bit of tortoiseshell thrown in there!

NANUSHKA at (capsule)
Nanushka took part in the (capsule) show at Paris this season.

Incredible sweaters from Nanuska's 'Sweater Love' capsule collection.

Gorgeous coats and colours!

We love the relaxed-cool vibe of these jeans and printed silk shirts.

You can always count on Nanushka to bring a bit of a boho vibe to their collections.

industry profile: joyrich's david melgar

When Joyrich's David Melgar came to Hong Kong to support Harvey Nichols with their Pop-Up event earlier this month, he drew out an incredibly cool and stylish crew of people who had very personal and unique style.  We knew then that we just had to get an interview with David to get some insight into the Joyrich brand and his approach to design.  David's love of fashion and creativity is infectious; he speaks with such passion and animation about his work.  It's no wonder his designs for Joyrich are filled with the same passion, fun and creativity as the man himself!

Joyrich's David Melgar.

Welcome to Hong Kong, how do you like it so far?  Can you tell us a little bit about your limited T-shirt design for Harvey Nichols?
I LOVE HONG KONG! I have great friends here and am so inspired by this city, it's truly one of my favorite places to be! Our limited shirt design with Harvey Nichols was one of our most popular graphics/prints made custom for our family at Harvey Nichols.  It has a cute little twist to it!

Tell us a little bit more about Joyrich and its aesthetic.
Joyrich is a mix of high-end aesthetics and casual Los Angeles vibes, combined with vintage tastes and styles from the 80's and 90's! Overall, it's just fun!

How did the Joyrich name come about? What does it mean?
There's no real specific meaning behind Joyrich but to be joyrful and rich in anything and everything that you do. It doesn't necessarily mean rich finically but rich in life and love, and to always enjoy every moment of life.

How did you get into designing for Joyrich? What is your favorite piece this season?
I met the owner of the brand after leaving an internship with a designer and we hit it off. Our vibe, style and direction was very similar and it happened to be a great connection! I don't really have a special piece every season; each piece is like a baby to me so that would be like asking me to pick my favorite child!  I can't do it!

Where do you draw your inspiration from and tell us a little but about your own personal style?
LIFE! i'm really inspired by my surroundings, music, people, experiences, travel and love even. I don't look to one specific thing for inspiration! My own style is just comfortable and casual, with a high-end twist.

A lot of celebrities shop at Joyrich; are any of them your muse? Who do you wish to see wearing Joyrich in the future?
We are VERY honored to have the support from many celebrities from around the world and to see any of them wearing what I design is such a compliment and a iconic moment for me. I don't desire to see anyone specific in Joyrich; just anyone wanting to express themselves through our art is important and such a compliment to us!

We heard there was recently a collection that you did with Disney, please let us know how that came about!
Growing up I was a HUGE Disney fanatic. Any chance I got, I went to Disneyland! I grew up with Mickey Mouse! So when the chance came to collaborate with Disney, it was such a fun experience. We wanted to clash vintage styles with a modern taste and it came out looking amazing! I am very proud of that project!

Congratulations on the 3-year anniversary of your Harajuku store; do you come by Asia a lot?
THANK YOU! Yes, Asia is my second home! I spend about a quarter of my year here in Asia and it's a great place! I'm mainly in Tokyo, but I have been all over Asia.

Fashion advice for our readers?
No matter what, always be yourself! Express yourself how you'd like and don't let other peoples' ideas of what you 'should' look like influence who you are.

electric sekki at chalayan fw13

Each season, Electric sekki has the distinct honour of being invited to the Chalayan show and, each season, it is the highlight of all of our trip there.  Hussein Chalayan is one of the last remaining truly innovative, boundary-pushing designers working today; he never fails to amaze us with the beauty and creativity of his work.  The Electric sekki team is also incredibly fortunate enough to have backstage access to the show each season and, we have to say, as far as backstage atmospheres at fashion weeks go, Chalayan's is a calm, super well-oiled machine!  See how the magic happens backstage at Chalayan's Fall/Winter 2013 Paris Fashion Week show.

Backsage passes!  That's just how we roll...

A model's make-up gets photographed backstage.

Hussein Chalayan (left) himself, looking very serene and relaxed backstage before the show.  Ironically, backstage at the Chalayan show is definitely one of the most calm and relaxed atmospheres at fashion week!

The show line-up.  So exciting!

Last-minute touches on this incredible 3D textured 'wall peel' dress.

The fitting racks backstage with each look listed out in minute detail for the model's dressers.

Shoes, glorious shoes!

If you're curious, this is what the crazy photographer pit looks like at a show.  Everyone fighting for the best space!

Look 5 coming down the runway.

Look 9, one of our favourite more wearable looks of the night; Chalayan's modern take on wardrobe classics such as denim and white shirting.

One of the three transforming dresses that the camera pit and show-goers went crazy over at the show!

The finale march.

Spotted: Style Bubble's Susie Bubble looking like her usual fashionable quirky self at the Chalayan show.  So happy to see her there!

Spotted: Hong Kong super stylist Ricky Kwok outside the Chalayan show looking ultra chic decked out in purple!

rugby 7's survival guide

Hong Kong's infamous Rugby 7's weekend starts today and continues through Sunday.  Rugby 7's weekend has become somewhat of an institution in Hong Kong.  You have to go at least once for the experience.  If you're headed there this weekend, then we've put together a little survival guide for you...

What to Wear
Anyone who's ever been to the Rugby 7's can tell you that you've simply got to show up in costume.  The crazier the better.  Get creative, people!  If you don't have the time or energy to make one yourself (ahem, cop out!) then head to Pottinger Street to find a ready-made one for you and your gang.  If you're not into costumes then, please, at least buy a wig!  If you arrive in anything else and expect to spend your weekend in South Stand, you will stick out like a sore thumb.  And not in a good way.

What to Bring
1. Sunscreen.  Even though the weather's predicted to be terrible this weekend, we'd suggest bringing sunscreen because you will be sitting out in the sun all day, probably drinking, and you will get burnt.
2. Emergency Sewing Kit.  Many a costume malfunction over the years has taught us all this!
3. Friends.  The 7's aren't fun without them.

What to Leave at Home
1. Your credit cards and large amounts of cash.  Chances are, you will loose everything you have on you at the 7's.  Minimise your risk, people!
2. Your honor.  Things will happen that you will regret.  Deal with it.

Tips
1. Wear closed-toe shoes.  This is key!  The floor at the 7's venue is notoriously disgusting and wearing open-toed shoes will mean that your feet will be swimming in that disgustingness all weekend.  Be smart, people!  We think a pair of Superga's are the perfect choice: closed-toe, flat for comfort and with a rubber non-slip sole.  Perfection.
2. Hydrate.  With water.  Especially if you're drinking alcohol.  You can thank us later when you're not nursing a week-long post-7's hangover.
3. Make friends with someone in a corporate box.  That way you can use their private bathrooms instead of the utterly rank public ones.
4. If you want to go to the South Stand, get there early!  Otherwise you'll spend half your day lining up in a queue to get in.  Not fun.
5. If you see your boss, avoid them at all costs.  Why?  Because either you or they are bound to be/get drunk at some point and things will get awkward from there.  Trust.
6. Try to watch the rugby.  It is the Rugby 7's, after all!

paris fashion week diary: arne eggers

As the Fashion Editor at Tatler Hong Kong, Arne Eggers has full access to all the most in-demand fashion shows and parties during fashion week.  On his recent trip to the Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013 shows, Arne was kind enough to share with us a small photo diary from his travels.  Proceed to view with caution: chance are you will be very, very jealous with all that he was able to see and do in beautiful Paris, surrounded by beautiful clothes and accessories!

FEELS LIKE HEAVEN
Paris Fashion Week, night one. First stop is the Swarovski haute couture exhibition with a cocktail at the Hotel de Ville. Lots of champagne, little to eat, but all in a spectacular setting.

SILENCIO PLEASE
Same night, many drinks later. Together with Veronica Chou, Tina Leung and Ground Zero's Philip Chu I first head to Manish Arora's after party at the W and later to David Lynch's club Silencio for a Diesel party. We discover a cosy private room – perfect for an impromptu photo session.

BRANCHING OUT
After a grey start, Paris' skies have finally turned blue. After a 10am Costume National show we walk off our heavy heads with a stroll along the Seine, past immaculately trimmed trees. Feels a bit Raf Simons to us. At the time anyway.

THE WORLD AT OUR FEET
At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld continues his quest for world domination next season. Little flags on a giant ball indicate Chanel's presence around the globe – when you see them flocking you know you're in Asia.

BOUDOIR CHIC
It's the last day of fashion week and very promptly at 10am (less seasoned editors will stand in front of closed door at this show) it's Louis Vuitton time. The show set up is a hotel corridor; the models emerge and disappear into "hotel rooms", dressed in slinky negliges and heavy overcoats.
