no. 21 launches menswear

It's official: No. 21 by Alessandro Dell'Acqua is officially launching menswear for the Fall/Winter 2014 season and we could not be more excited!  Dell'Acqua's womenswear collections are often inspired by menswear classics, updated with a feminine twist, so it makes sense that the designer is launching menswear next year.  Dell'Acqua made the announcement earlier this month and the international fashion press has picked-up the story with much excitement and anticipation.  Although the Fall/Winter 2014 collection will be his first menswear collection for No. 21, Dell'Acqua is not unused to dressing men; due to the masculine-inspired nature of his womenswear pieces, many fashionable men have already been seen wearing his womenswear line in recent months.  It must have been these men and their adoration of the label that encouraged Dell'Acqua to launch his menswear line.  Since the announcement, Dell'Acqua has been teasing his Instagram followers with snippets of his his menswear collection progress: one recent tip that he shared with his followers is that the menswear collection labels will feature a black ribbon instead of the nude of his womenswear line.  We can't wait to see what Dell'Acqua comes up with in the menswear department; rest assured, we will fill you in when the time comes and we will be waiting with baited breath until then!

No. 21 by Alessandro Dell'Acqua's announcement that they would be launching menswear was met with huge excitement in the press.

A recent snap from @dellacqua's Instagram account, revealing that the menswear collections would feature a black ribbon label instead of the womenswear's nude.

Although No. 21 by Alessandro Dell'Acqua has only ever featured womenswear designs, many of the masculine-inspired pieces are often worn by fashion-forward men, many of whom Dell'Acqua features on his Instagram account, @dellacqua.  See some of our favourites below!

the men in our lives

It's nice to know that the men in our lives are dressed well--and when those men include 'mando-pop' star Khalil Fong and upcoming DJ Tedman Lee of Ni. Ne. Mo and the Living Discoheads, well, that's just even better!  Both men seem to have a penchant for ksubi, having worn the brand in two interviews with two of the city's biggest publications recently.  Khalil Fong chose a graphic tee by ksubi in his cover story for ELLE MEN magazine, while Tedman Lee decked himself out for an interview with the South China Morning Post.  Their two styles are vastly different, yet both men wear the brand in their own unique way--proving that the best way to rock an outfit is to rock in your own individual way, with a touch of your unique personality.  And, hey, it doesn't hurt to seriously dig their music, either!

introducing: zanerobe

The playful quality of Zanerobe's menswear designs are perhaps best highlighted by the story by which the brand came into being.  In fact, it all started with a bet over a couple of beers.  Co-founders Jonathan Yeo and Leith Testoni were having a drink together when they spotted a man in what they described as a "hideous striped shirt"; Jonathan bet Leith that he couldn't design a better shirt than the "hideous" one they had just seen.  And, the rest is history!  That bet ended up spawning a line of 6-8 shirts, which the boys ended up selling in select stores in Sydney.  Since then, the label has expanded beyond just shirting into pants, jackets, knitwear and even swimwear, and is sold at top-tier retailers internationally.  And now, finally, they are the latest edition to the Electric sekki family!  Join us in welcoming Zanerobe to Electric sekki and stay tuned to keep up-to-date with all that's going on with the label, right here at the Electric sekki blog.  Welcome to Electric sekki, Zanerobe!

love for dear jane

Dear Jane was one of Hong Kong's first successful indie boy bands, rising to fame in 2006 with their album, 100, after performing more than 100 live-shows on the indie music circuit before the release of their debut album.  Since then, Dear Jane has remained happily in the public eye, with a steady fan base as well as a second album, released in 2009.  We were excited to see the boys dressed in Insight, ksubi and, of course, a touch of Superga for their interview with am730.  The boys looked just the right amount of comfortable and cool.  Exactly how we like our male musicians to be dressed!  None of that crazy diva-style over-the-top styling that the guys seem so into these days.  Thanks, Dear Jane, for the love!

rubberband in superga

Ever since RubberBand came onto the Canto-pop scene in Hong Kong in 2004, they have been making a name for themselves as a group with a unique sound and a real devotion to their music.  Made up of four guys from varied backgrounds, each of their different interests and upbringings has contributed greatly to RubberBand's individual take on Canto-pop.  They also always look like a cool group of guys with whom you'd love to hang-out; each of their music videos depicts them doing some fun sun-filled activity, from cycling along the waterfront, to marching down the sea line, to a video driven by action figures for protagonists!  So we were thrilled when we saw three of the band member of RubberBand sporting classic Superga sneakers--they are perfect for RubberBand's fun-loving, creative and stylish lifestyle!

ricky wears richard

Richard Nicoll has collaborated with ksubi on his collection of eyewear since his Spring/Summer 2012 collection and, each season, we get thousands of questions about when the collaboration is going to drop in stores.  And though his sunglasses range was always meant to be unisex, it was not until his first menswear collection at the Fall/Winter 2012 London MAN shows that the Richard Nicoll x Ksubi actually debuted on men on the runway, to much acclaim.  So we were really happy to see one of Electric sekki's favourite stylists and long-time friend, Ricky Kwok, sporting a pair of Richard Nicoll x Ksubi Spring/Summer 2013 sunglasses.  They're a classic shape, with a subtle design signature done with a metallic trim around the lenses, keeping the overall look of the frames timeless, with a twist.  We especially love the way Ricky styled them with other modern-updated classics such as a bright cyan button-up shirt and a tan light bomber jacket.  It's the perfect casual summer look; bravo, Ricky!

the key to style

SHINee is in many way's K-pop's male answer to Girls Generation and at the forefront of SHINee as their lead dancer and rapper is Key.  Since the group's formation in 2008, Key has caused millions of girls' hearts to throb and their throats to scream in excitement.  He's also become a fashion icon, with legions of male fans scrambling to imitate his style.  So it came as no surprise to us when we saw Key upload a photo of himself with House of Holland's Henry Holland, wearing a pair of House of Holland sunglasses.  Key chose one of House of Holland's best selling round-frame styles, with a reflective rose gold finish.  We think they're perfect for summer.  And now that they're Key-approved, we're sure millions of others think so, too!

style jam: print-on-print

"Today, I just had some fun with it, you know?  The looks I put together are mix between my personal style and the way I would style a shoot, as well.  There are things that I did in this shoot that I might not necessarily do, like wearing head-to-toe matching print, but after seeing it today on camera, I might do it  one day.  It was kind of like a cool little test to see what I can try, eventually, if I was outside on the street just every day.  It was cool having fun with those brands and just playing around with it.  My favorite pieces were the ksubi printed tee and shorts--the combo together.  I loved the tee and seeing the shorts today was awesome, so now I want to buy them both!"

Carlo goes all-out in ksubi.

Carlo wears a ksubi tee, ksubi printed denim shorts and a ksubi denim coat.

style jam: the 90's

"My personal style and styling work, I think, is quite different.  There's always a bit of me in each shoot, regardless - I can't really help it, it's my signature - but, for my personal style, I can't really go as crazy as what I would do for a shoot.  You can go as creative and silly and stupid as you want in a photo shoot, actually, but the way that I do it is I always put myself in it.  I always think, 'If I was living this concept, if I was in that world, how would I do it?  How would I push it further?'  My personal style, though is toned down.  You can't really walk around wearing such crazy things all day, every day.  There's definitely a time and a place for it.  I have special pieces that I will wear occasionally, but that's what keeps them special, I guess."

Carlo wears a ksubi shirt, ksubi denim jacket and ksubi printed jeans.

Carlo wears a pair of iconic House of Holland sunglasses.

A close-up look of these printed ksubi jeans.

Carlo's always been a master of layering.  He expertly mixes this exaggerated-length shirt under a shorter denim jacket.

The washed-out eagle detail on this classic ksubi denim jacket channels 90's era fashion style, of which Carlo is a big fan.

"My style is more of a high-street thing.  I've always had a real street influence and a sort of a 90's thing  going on, growing up in the 90's.  I never let it go!  That's always stuck with me and, with the timing now, as well, with everyone digging the whole 90's thing, it's awesome for me!  I can just continue to dress the way I do, but it's given me years of practice, as well.  I've definitely got a real street vibe, but I try to keep it chic at the same time.  I'm not doing anything too avant-garde; I'm not wearing skirts or anything like that.  I still love my high-end designers, as well, so I try to incorporate the two."

style jam: juan-carlos aquino

In our first male-only Style Jam, we had the pleasure of working with the very stylish and incredibly cool Juan Carlos-Aquino.  As a buyer for concept store Konzepp and a freelance stylist, Carlo has a killer unique style of his own that really sets him apart from others in Hong Kong.  His keen eye for fashion and (somewhat) daily outfit choices are all chronicled on his blog, Pronounced [Stahyl]., but be warned: it's an addictive blog that will suck you in and keep you clicking "Older Posts" for hours!  Every time we see this guy, he's always got something really special and interesting going on that we've rarely seen worn by his male peers.  Carlo's got a really specific eye for what he likes, what he wants and what suits him well.  In this three-part Style Jam series, Carlo puts together a trio of looks from the showroom and tells us a little bit about his personal style ethos.

Carlo wears an Insight 51 shirt, ksubi denim shorts and a ksubi sweatshirt over his shoulders, his own sneakers, beanie and jeans.

"I do the buying for Konzepp, which is a lifestyle space focusing on different unique designs and things that aren't so readily available in Hong Kong; it's a platform for designers and upcoming artists to show their work.  For me, it goes hand-in-hand with styling, being a buyer, because you really always have to be on top of your trends and it's all about knowing your market.  The only challenge with the job is to find those new brands!  You have no idea where to begin, because the idea is, 'How do you find a brand that no one knows exists and you can't yet find it in Hong Kong?'  How?  By sitting on the internet for a very long time.  Going through blogs, magazines, everything.  Even things like, if I see something on somebody that I've never seen before walking by, I'll actually go up to them and find out where they got it from. 9 times out of 10 it's not in Hong Kong, so it's a really good way for me to find out about new brands."

"With the brands that we've come across, there has been a lot that I have really loved.  This isn't a recent brand that I've found and it's actually one that I've been following a lot, since when I was in Australia, but it's still not available here and now we're picking it up; it's called Wood Wood.  It should be coming in within the next week.  Both men and women.  Something like that is something that I've always been really supportive of."

We love the contrast between these punk-inspired faded cross print denim shorts from ksubi and the slightly bohemian beach-bum floral print of this Insight 51 shirt.

The view from behind: just as great as the view from the front!
