spring 2014: sass & bide

sass & bide showed their first New York Fashion Week collection last week to a crowd that was rapt with excitement about the brand's arrival Stateside with a new store in New York City.  The Australian brand has been showing abroad as a part of the heaving-hitting London Fashion Week schedule for many seasons already, but felt now was the right time to break into the American market, with the opening of their boutique.  The collection was reflective of the new American chapter of their lives, with a lighter, more sportswear-influenced feeling overall.  The collection was perhaps not as intricate or over-the-top as it has been in the past: this season, the girls concentrated, instead, on the intricacy of the fabrics themselves (the sheer polka dots, the corded textiles) and the way they moved (the layers, the drapery).  Of course, it wouldn't be sass & bide without a little bit of their trademark embellishment and so we still saw lots of tribal-inspired metallic beading, with some more feminine floral embroidery thrown in for good measure.  The palette this season was, again, largely black-and-white, but those who ache for sass & bide's way with colour can rejoice in the return of bright hues such as pink and orange.  We can't wait to get our hands on these pieces in the showroom!  Congratulations to Heidi and Sarah-Jane on a successful first New York Fashion Week season!
